In certain circumstances such as physical activity and extreme heat during the summer, water losses are greater. And whatever the age, minimal dehydration is enough to impair the proper functioning of our organs. Headaches, joint pain, fine lines, constipation, urinary infections, are common signs of dehydration.
So let’s see some essential tips for staying hydrated this summer!
DRINK A GLASS OF WATER AS SOON AS YOU WAKE UP
It’s an easy gesture that we should all do! Many specialists advise drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up to rehydrate the entire body after hours of sleep and eliminate toxins accumulated during the night and favored by lying down.
DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOU'RE THIRSTY
The feeling of thirst is actually a cry for help. It is an alarm signal from the body that alerts us to possible dehydration. Have the habit of keeping a bottle of water on hand and drinking a few sips regularly. You can also schedule certain key times of the day when you drink a glass of water, for example with every meal, before during and after a workout, during your breaks at work.
PREFER WATER AT ROOM TEMPERATURE
The colder or hotter the water, the more energy (and water) your body has to expend to get it to room temperature. Additionally, cold water in particular can cause digestion problems and even headaches. The ideal temperature? Warm water between 12 and 14°C to maintain body temperature without spending too much energy and more refreshing in the long term.
ALWAYS HAVE A BOTTLE WITH YOU
The water bottle should be the essential accessory that you never take off. At work, we put it next to the computer to remind us to drink. At home, we leave some next to the bed, in the kitchen and even on the living room table. A good way to remind us to drink a few sips regularly.
FLAVORING YOUR WATER
To make you want to drink regularly, make your own flavored water by infusing some fresh foods in still or sparkling water. Here are some detox water recipe ideas:
- Strawberry, lime, basil
- Raspberry, cucumber, lemon
- Grapefruit, lemon, thyme
- Pineapple, ginger
- Watermelon, cucumber, mint
AVOID ALCOHOL AND SWEET DRINKS
To avoid taking in too many empty calories, limit your consumption of alcohol and fruit juices. Although fruit juices or smoothies seem like a healthy choice, their high sugar content and drastic losses in fiber and micronutrients make them unattractive.
Alcohol, for its part, dehydrates the body by acting on a hormone that blocks the reabsorption of water in the kidneys. Thus, alcohol accelerates diuresis, the elimination of urine, and without a significant intake of water at the same time, the body quickly dehydrates.
