IT'S A BACTERIA STORY!

SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) is a condition defined by chronic microbial overgrowth in the small intestine. Normally, the small intestine is less colonized by bacteria than the colon, which is full of them. When these bacteria decide to set up camp in this area, it causes a myriad of symptoms that can affect quality of life (bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, and weight loss).

Currently, there is no standardized treatment to cure SIBO, but it is recommended to be accompanied by a specialist and to follow this logic:

1

CLEANING OUT YOUR INTESTINES

First, you need to switch to extermination mode for the bacteria that have abnormally invaded your small intestine. To clean things up, you will probably have to take antibiotics. However, with the advice of your doctor, you can replace or supplement antibiotics with plantsto get rid of as many digestive bacteria as possible naturally by dislodging those that are in the wrong place.

2

STRENGTHEN YOUR INTESTINAL MICROBIOTA

While antibiotics are a very effective anti-infectious weapon, they are unfortunately likely to unbalance the intestinal microbiota by eliminating bad bacteria but also good bacteria, which support our immune and digestive functions.

Hence the importance of giving your microbiota a little boost to maintain its balance by stocking up on good bacteria after your antibiotic treatment.

3

PAMPER YOUR INTESTINAL WALL

At the end of this bacterial eradication, your intestinal wall is among the collateral damage. Having become porous, it can no longer effectively fulfill its mission as a barrier against pathogens and absorbs good nutrients less effectively. You then feel tired all the time, transit problems become recurrent and your natural defenses no longer protect you as well as before. By restoring the integrity of the intestinal barrier, you will improve your digestion and your transit, strengthen your immune system and gain vitality! It is time to stop this vicious circle and provide glutamine, fuel for your intestinal cells, so that they can renew themselves. Glutamine can be taken continuously if necessary and in the event of minor digestive problems, we advise you to repeat a course at least with each change of season.

Diet is a real concern for people with SIBO. Many, without consulting their doctor, cut out essential foods like fruits and vegetables, legumes and dairy products, for fear of seeing the next crisis coming. And we understand them, because this pathology can have a very significant impact on the quality of life of those who suffer from it. But it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to favor a healthy and varied diet.

WHAT DIET SHOULD I EAT?

When digestive symptoms persist despite adopting healthy eating habits, it is recommended to try a low FODMAP diet for a period of 2 to 6 weeks. FODMAPs are fermentable carbohydrates that may be partly responsible for symptoms in people with SIBO. These fermentable sugars, the favorite treat of bacteria, are very poorly digestible carbohydrates that the small intestine has difficulty absorbing.

GET SUPPORT

At the same time, regular monitoring by a dietician is highly recommended to help you regulate your transit according to your digestive symptoms, during a flare-up or in remission. To do this, they will guide you towards foods to favor or temporarily avoid, while the crisis passes, as well as culinary techniques to improve the digestive tolerance of certain foods.

DIJO TIP 🤍

During times of intense crisis, it is important to learn how to manage stress, as it can worsen SIBO symptoms. Practicing meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can be beneficial in relieving symptoms.
